Overview
Starts From/Returns to Mombasa, Kilifi, Watamu, Bamburi & North Coast beach areas. We’ll pick you up from your hotel or resort. Leave the coast behind as you journey to the heart of Kenya and its exciting national parks. For six days we’ll track Africa’s famous wildlife – everything from lion and leopard to rhino and flamingo. This medium-length safari will impress with its joyful variety of dramatic landscapes and wild animals. From Mt. Kilimanjaro to the wonders of the Masai Mara Reserve, we will keep you engaged and excited on a Great Kenya Tours adventure.
We’ll start out at the largest reserve of them all, Tsavo East National Park, a place of rugged plains and red-dust soil. All the large game is here including the big cats. For guaranteed sightings of elephants, we’ll travel next to Amboseli National Park under the shadow of majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro. This is a picture postcard of a park.
You’ll be entertained by the birdlife at Lake Nakuru National Park – it is varied, omnipresent and quite colorful – with pelicans, storks and flamingos, among many others gathered by the lake. Wrapping up our tour is the famous Masai Mara National Reserve, the king of Kenya’s parks. Home to the “Big Five”, it’s also the site of the Great Migration, the largest spectacle of animals on the planet.
Then, we’ll head to Nairobi where you’ll take an easy and scenic one-hour flight back to Mombasa and the coast. Should you have a special need, request or wish, do let us know so we can plan your safari exactly to your liking.
Itinerary
The safari begins with a pick-up at your beach hotel or resort. We’ll take the Mombasa – Nairobi Highway, viewing farmlands and Kenyan countryside along the way. Meal Plan: Lunch, Dinner
We’ll be greeted by the vast, almost limitless horizon of Tsavo East, as we enter the park. This is a rugged place of sparse grassland, punctuated by active watering holes. We’ll be on our first game drive, looking for elephant, lion, buffalo and impala.
Afterwards, we’ll freshen up at our accommodation and enjoy lunch amongst the vastness of the park. Then we’re off on another game drive, perhaps to the Aruba Dam, a favorite spot for nourishment for the park’s many thirsty inhabitants. Your expert driver/guide will point out the different species and will always be present for any questions or requests you may have.
We love the sight of wildlife in the morning, so it’s an early rise to watch nature’s bounty. We’ll breakfast and then go for another game drive as we exit, on our way to Amboseli. Like a compass, the sight of mighty Mt. Kilimanjaro will steer us to this small but active park, lying at the foot of the great mountain.
After freshening up, we’ll take our first game drive looking for the great herds of elephants for which the park is famous. And we won’t have to look long as Amboseli is dense with these fine and noble creatures. With Kilimanjaro in the background and the mighty elephants nearby, you can’t take a bad picture. If you’d like, enjoy an optional visit with the local Maasai people in a nearby village. Your guide can make the arrangements.
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
We’ve got a big journey today, so we’ll head out early to begin our scenic drive. You’ll have plenty of stops to admire the timeless drama of the Rift Valley escarpment with its awesome rises and deep gorges. Adding yet more facets to our road trip will be stops at the Rift Valley lakes of Naivasha and Elementaita with their active birdlife.
Lake Nakuru Park is up next. It’s a versatile refuge with its avian life by the lake, large game inland and special sanctuary for black rhinos. Arriving here, we’ll take a drive around the alkaline lake looking for pelican, kingfisher, ostrich and flamingo brightening up its shore. And if we’re lucky, we may spot a rhino in the protected sanctuary.
We’ll catch more of the park’s delightful animals and birdlife this morning before heading out on our drive to the Masai Mara Reserve.
We’ll arrive at the park around mid-afternoon with plenty of time for an introductory game drive. You’ll quickly see why this reserve is Kenya’s most popular and known throughout the world. There is a concentration of wildlife in the Mara that is found nowhere else. No other park surpasses its density of lions – so be on the lookout for the great felines. The park itself is a pleasing mix of golden savannah and rolling hills seemingly decorated with the unique acacia trees.
This will be an active day of unlimited game drives throughout this world-famous park. The Mara is an exciting experience any time of the year with its bounty of wildlife. However, during the Great Migration from July to October, the reserve practically explodes with an invasion of millions of wildebeest and zebra pouring in over the Mara River, searching for ever fresher grasses on which to sustain themselves.
Part of this endless cycle of nature is the predators waiting for these hordes of grazers. At the Mara River, lion, leopard, cheetah, and crocodile complete this circle of life. If you’d like to witness this yearly influx of wildlife from above or just admire the beautiful landscape of the Mara, take an optional early morning hot air balloon ride over the park.
You can also add to your experience of the park with an optional visit to one of the local Masai villages and get to meet these indigenous people. Your driver/guide can make all the arrangements.
In this place of endless animals, we’ll jump in our 4 x 4 for an early morning game drive. Here are more opportunities to enjoy both larger and smaller game over the golden grasslands of the Masai Mara.
But soon we’ll head to Nairobi with memories and reflections about our days on safari.
